Hiring a Plumber
It’s the worst case scenario; it’s a Saturday, meaning it’s quite possibly your day off. You rise from your bed lethargically and walk downstairs to the kitchen to give yourself the live-saving cup of tea that has been your life-blood for about a decade now. Somehow, in your tiredness, you realise something’s very different about the kitchen today, however you just can’t put your finger on it. You walk into the living room, and as the tea gradually wakes you up you realise that for some reason your feet are absolutely soaking wet. You walk into the hall, no wetness there; the dog hasn’t had an accident obviously. You walk back into the kitchen and realise with horror that somehow you’re ankle deep in water. Looking outside and seeing the dazzling sunny day makes you think that the floor can’t be weather related, so you open the cupboard under the sink. Ah time to call in a plumber.
At some point in our lives, we’ll all be in this situation. We’ll all be feeling rather hopeless and powerless that somehow the pipe underneath your sink has come loose and allowed rather a lot of water to come gushing out onto the floor. Universally, this is the moment when we all agree that a plumber would definitely come in handy. However, as you pick up the phone book and flick to the ‘P’ pages you realise that there are rather a lot of plumbers to choose from, a whole three pages in fact. How do you know which ones are legitimate, how do you know which ones will even do the job properly? No one wants a plumber who has to come to the house multiple times because the same job before was a botched one.
A tip to finding a legitimate plumber is simple, do your research! If you find a plumber in the phone book don’t just let the advert be your guide a tool commonly known among people nowadays called the internet is a host to all kinds of websites too. Hopefully most plumbers will have websites, which will allow you a better insight into what kind of job they do and how much they charge an hour. Plumber’s websites may also offer information on how to fix simple jobs yourself, so if you’re into DIY this is ideal! If not, then pick a plumber that feels right for you and that you’ve researched so you know they’re legitimate.
Upon the plumber entering your house, make sure you check for ID. You may think this looks a little fussy, but it’s the best way to distinguish the legitimate plumbers from the ones more likely to botch it up. As long as you’re polite about it, the plumber won’t mind. Next, show the plumber where the leakage is, try to be as specific as possible so the plumber knows what they are dealing with, although if they’re good then it’s mostly likely they’ll know from first look. Finally don’t stand over the plumber as this would suggest to him or her that you don’t trust them, and you should be able to unless you didn’t do enough research on the company. Finally a cup of tea for the plumber while they’re working will make him or her feel comfortable and will allow a better relationship with the company you’ve chosen.
So the three golden rules in hiring a plumber are firstly, do your research, secondly, check for ID upon their arrival and thirdly be polite and well-mannered. These people should know what they’re doing so let them do their job and hopefully your pipe will be fixed in no time with minimal cost!
