The benefits of double glazing
With more and more attention focused on energy saving and green living, double glazing is proving to be a popular choice among homeowners who want to reduce heating bills. One of the benefits of double glazing is increased insulation. This means that on a cold winter’s day, heat remains in the home. Unlike single glazed windows which offer virtually no insulation, the double glazed windows trap the heat inside and create an almost impenetrable barrier, preventing the cold air outside to enter the home. Insulation is increased with double glazed windows are made up of two glass panels and with the modern double glazed panels, the space in between the panels are filled with Argon gas. The gas not only serves as an effective barrier but also adds to the benefits of double glazing by serving as a noise barrier.
In countries where winter temperatures drop to below freezing, the benefits of double glazing will, undoubtedly be noticed in the home’s heating and utilities bills. With the double glazed windows serving as an effective insulator, less money and energy will need to be spent on heating and furthermore the double glazing will drastically reduce damp in the home as one of the benefits of double glazing is reduced condensation. The condensation in the home is decreased as the inner section of the double glazed windows are kept at the same temperature as the room, while the outer section of the windows serves as shield against the below freezing conditions. When single glazed window are used, the vast difference in outer and inner temperatures causes the internal air to reach its dew point and the dew or moisture is deposited on the coldest object (generally the cold, glass windows).
The cost of double glazed windows may be a deterrent for a number of homeowners who are seriously considering the vast benefits of double glazing. However, when the long term benefits are considered, such as the increased warmth, improved insulation and the fact that double glazing allows for a virtually soundproof home, the benefits of double glazing may prove to be enough to warrant spending the extra money on these types of windows. More than just enhancing the interior environment of the home, homes that are fitted with double glazed windows will have a far higher resale value than homes with single glazed windows.
When it comes to the environmental benefits of double glazing, up to as much as 18% of heat in a home is lost due to poor insulation and 18% of heat is lost through windows. Not only will double glazed windows be essential for keeping heat in and reducing heating bills, single glazed windows also allow unhealthy emissions to enter the home. Carbon emissions from passing cars and other environmental pollutants are prevented from entering the home if double glazed windows are fitted. Homes situated on particularly busy city streets will certainly derive the most benefits of double glazing – noise reduction and far less harmful pollutants are unable to filter through the home’s windows.
