If you have yet to visit the section of this site called ‘Portfolio’ you will have missed the groundbreaking move we are making towards building websites.

So successful have the websites that we have built thus far been, that we’re flipping the industry on its head.

No longer do you have to pay for a website and hope that it works. Now, you can buy your website on a per call basis.

With a per call approach, we build the site and you pay ONLY when the phone starts to ring. There’s no up-front costs, no risk and no contract. If we don’t get your hone ringing, you don’t have to pay.

Check out www.builder-in-yorkshire.co.uk as one example, or www.yorkshire-windscreens.co.uk as another.

As popularity of the Internet grows, businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the need to be on the first page of Google. But how do you get to the top of page 1?

Of course, in addition to solid construction, focus on H1, H2 and H3 tags and well written copy, your website needs that little bit extra to achieve page one ranking, certainly when it comes to very competitive search terms.

That little bit extra is you website’s PageRank.

Named after Google’s co-founder Larry Page (and not ‘page’ as in ‘web page’), PageRank is how Google sorts the relevant and popular from the unrelevant and unpopular in order to give what it believes is the best results return for its users.

Search engine giant Google explains PageRank in considerable detail here, but in short, it seems that Google’s PageRank system uses the Internet’s vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value.

In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to web page B as a vote, by web page A, for web page B. However, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a web page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”

So, whilst all links from other (relevant) websites to your website are undeniably important, get your site to the top of page one by having high ranking sites link to yours. That’s where the challenge lies for all of us.

Getting visitors to your website is one thing. Getting them to make contact with you is something else.

There are plenty of free web statistics packages out there, such as the highly acclaimed Google Analytics, but these only tell you half of the story. Your website is really an extension to any other advertising you may be doing, or have done in the past. If you have designed your website to generate sales as well as traffic, then it’s important to understand how good your website is at generating sales, or at the very least, telephone enquiries.

This is one area where Google’s analytics tool; and all the others, fall short.

So how do you work out how many people have called you from your website?

If you try to track your calls manually, it’s almost impossible to understand where your customers have found your telephone number. By asking your customers (if you remember to) human error inevitably gets in the way and your call statistics get horribly skewed. But there is a solution. Use technology to track your inbound calls to see where the customers found you.

Services such as Media Spy’s AdTracker, will allow you to quickly understand the effectiveness of all your advertising and marketing - including your website, by counting the calls made to each of your adverts. It allows you to quickly determine which adverts are making you money and which are just costing you money. Once you know this, you can decide where to spend your marketing budget to be assured that it will bring you a positive return.

The concept is simple. Along with your website, Media Spy gives each of your adverts a different telephone number. All the calls come through to you as normal, but information relating to the calls get tracked along the way. The simple system tells you not only how many calls you have received, but tells you when the calls were made and where the caller is situated. It is inexpensive, hugely effective and, best of all is guaranteed to save you money or they’ll give you your money back.

There’s little argument these days that plenty of relevant content is the key to a successful web site, and the presentation of that content is a major factor in holding the attention of your visitors. The look of your site is undeniably important, because it says something about your business and presents an image to your prospective customers; however many web designers destroy their efforts by making simple mistakes in how they present their content.

Here are 5 examples of common web design mistakes and our tips on how to avoid them.

1. Being hard to contact. If you don’t have your contact details on your homepage, the second most popular page of most websites is the ‘Contact Us’ page. Users want to be able to reach the people with whom they are doing business, quickly, easily and without fuss. Having to navigate through lots of pages vainly hoping to find a telephone number will lead users away from your site. Providing an email address and a phone number (on every page, if possible) can help alleviate your customers’ concerns. If you want to automatically track the volume of calls you receive from your website find out more here.

2. Slow-to-load pages. Most designers understand that web users want to go straight to the content they’ve searched for; however there are some who still insist on either making you sit through a splash page, while others use annoying and long winded flash introductions. For the web visitor there is nothing worse than watching ‘Loading’ for 40 seconds as your page loads up in their browser. Numerous online studies show that no matter how well-intentioned these introduction pages are, their main result is to drive traffic away from your site.

3. Navigation hell. If visitors to your site cannot get where they want to go in two clicks, many will just leave out of frustration. Too many choices (pages and sub-pages of options), the omission of a simple “back” button that fails to take them to the last page they visited, and other such navigation mistakes will cost you many customers. Keep it simple is the rule of thumb here.

4. Jargon. Business-to-business and high-tech sites are usually the worst offenders in filling their content with industry jargon. When writing any content for your site you must keep the user in mind. It’s highly likely that they just want the basic facts of what your business is all about and what services or products you provide and will be put off by unnecessary jargon and three letter acronyms.

5. Bad photos. Bad photographs - and bad graphics for that matter, can totally ruin your website and make your site look horribly amateurish. Remember, for many users, your website is your shop window. Poor photography means your chance to impress may be lost and you can ruin any chance you may have of converting a visitor into a customer. When you choose your photos and graphics, choose strong pictures that say something good about your business. Better still, get some professional website photography done. It is going to be more than worth it in the long run.

The above list is by no means exhaustive. We’d love to tell you more. Why not contact us to find out how we can help you.

How would we cope if it wasn’t for the Internet? It’s now used for such a massive variety of things, from reading the news to booking holidays that it is definitely part of life in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a business there’s little doubt that your potential customers unknowingly judge you these days by the quality of your website. In a matter of seconds (or split seconds depending on which research you read) customers will decide if you are the type of business they want to deal with. So, getting the design and content of your website is of paramount importance.

Why, then, do so many businesses not have a website at all? I remember reading a BBC article back in November of 2007 which stated that more than half of the UK’s small and medium sized businesses don’t have a website. Now, it may have changed dramatically in the last 14 months, but I find that quite astounding. If you don’t have any presence at all on the Internet, how will your past, present and future customers consider you?

Yellow Pages useage is rapidly declining

There was a time when your advert in the Yellow Pages was a clue to the credibility of your business. People would judge you on what they saw and it often gave them peace of mind. Sadly, thanks to the Internet the ‘good old Yellow Pages’ days are numbered. It served its purpose for more than 40 years, but times move on and the Internet is the way ahead. Back on to those 50% of businesses that don’t quite understand that…

Maybe it’s because, for many, it’s a relatively unknown quantity. Maybe they don’t put enough importance on the web. Maybe they just don’t want to be bothered with it (I know of an accountancy firm that still uses pencil and paper to keep their records and one or two companies who don’t have a PC, let alone access to the Internet!)

Maybe - and this is the basis on which Brightmix was born - they don’t have the time to even start looking into having either a new website or their current website updated. Well, it’s time to realise that a website is not just necessary; it’s potentially life threatening for your business if you don’t have one!
